Creating an identity is one thing that defines a graphic designer. You have to try and include the idea of the identity along with the design that will make it stand out. I was given “Face The Music” a DJ and PA system hire shop. I had to first come up with an identity that people would recognise automatically…

My idea was to incorporate the well-recognised symbols that allow us the control over music. Each symbol would represent a part of the transaction with the client, the play button would be the start and the stop button would symbolise the end of the business with the client. This fits in with the idea of hiring a DJ or a PA System. Because the symbols are usually encased in a round circle, I decided that I needed a rounded typeface that I could use the symbols to replace parts of the type.

For the business card front I used the identity that I had just created. For the back I used a close up of the identity around the logo that represents the stage of the business with the client. So for the business card I used the play button because often the first thing a client will see or be given is the business card. I used a rounded type but one that was more legible than the one I used for my identity.

The compliment slip was much similar to the business card. I used the same idea of zooming in on the identity but this time it was on the stop symbol. The compliment slip is a way of expressing thanks for the business, but also a way of keeping relations open which is why I included the catch phrase “please don’t stop the music”.

The letterhead included all of the ideas from the previous designs, it had a design similar to that of the back of the business card and compliment slip, but also I designed it to be folded into 3rds. This is so that when it is taken out of the envelope you would see the top third with the design first.
